What is online shopping fraud?

Online shopping fraud describes the way in which fraudsters target online consumers. Fraudsters have developed a number of ways to exploit online shoppers for criminal gains.

They may offer goods that are less valuable than originally advertised or are significantly different from their original description. They may even take a payment without ever sending the goods the buyer has paid for.

You can stay safe when shopping on the internet by considering a few simple points each time you purchase:

  • Check the description of the item you are purchasing carefully before offering to pay for it
  • Check reviews or feedback for the company or seller you are looking to buy from
  • Always read the terms and conditions of any purchase you are thinking of making
  • Paying with a debit or credit card is the most secure way of making a transaction
  • Be wary of offers that seem too good to be true, they probably are!
  • Download Rapport to help protect your card details whilst shopping online
