How do I cancel a direct debit?

You can cancel a direct debit online up to 8.20pm (UK time) on the day the payment is due to be taken from your account.

Before you cancel a direct debit you should usually let the payee know that you're about to do this.

Your balance might not look as you would expect when cancelling a direct debit. Visit for some examples.

Cancelling a direct debit online

  1. Log in to your Digital Banking at www.rbsdigital.com (opens in a new window)
  2. Select 'Payments and transfers' from the left hand menu.
  3. From the 'Direct debits' section select 'Manage direct debits'.
  4. Select the appropriate direct debit from your direct debits list then select 'Cancel direct debit' and follow the instructions on screen.

It may take up to 24 hours for the balance of your account to be adjusted.

Cancelling a direct debit using your mobile banking app

  1. Log in to your Mobile Banking app
  2. Select the account that the direct debit is set up against
  3. Select the 'Direct debits' section
  4. Select the direct debit you want cancelled. You will see the detail of the direct debit, and the option to cancel the direct debit will appear at the bottom of this screen

If you cancel your direct debit at or after 8.20pm (UK time) on the day the payment is due, future payments will have been cancelled. However the payment due on that day will already have been taken and we will not have been able to retrieve it.

Cancelling a direct debit over the phone or in branch

You can also cancel a direct debit at a branch or via telephone banking.

If you believe the payment has been requested in error, please contact your local branch or our webchat team.
